Starting at the station, the next track is a loop line leading to a new station not far from the engine.   

 

The third track is the service line.  Pupils can also make a service shed.  Spare rolling stock can be picked up from there.  Pupils will be asked to do a fair amount of shunting including reverse travel.

 

Later, there is a sign showing the track choice.  The signal presently shows the right (not the correct side) track now. Placed on the other side would show the left track.  An arrow could be better.

Pupils will be asked if they can create a new station on the main line - the largest 'circle'.   There are now three stations.

The station will need an announcements facility.  Making that will occur in a subsequent session.  

An early question is:

What kind of people are seen at a station?

Pupils could play the roles of Station Master, announcer, porter, guard, the public etc, after discussion as to what is involved in each type.
